aswMBR
is a free rootkit scanner application that was developed to detect MBR/VBR/SRV rootkits like ZAaccess, Whistler, MBRroot/Sinowal, TDL4/3/Alureon, Cidox, Pihar and other. aswMBR has ability to scan for rootkits that are associated with malware programs and remove them while your antivirus application is not able to.

Rootkits can hide on your computer and give unauthorized access to your system. They tend to hide well and that is why aswMBR is an application designed to deal with them.

Almost all rootkits change the existing Master Boot Record, aswMBR has an ability that allows it to write a new Master Boot Record. The FixMBR button will erase the infected/suspected MBR and replace it with a fresh one.

aswMBR features a comprehensive interface that makes it very easy to use regardless of your experience with the computer. It offers you a simple window containing only the buttons that you need to click to start scanning, fix detected problems, save logs or close applications.

The scan takes several minutes at most and displays all detected items if found. The location path for each rootkit found is highlighted in red, making it easier for you to see it. aswMBR needs to use a different method for removing rootkits and for this provides two different “fix” buttons. at the first time it’s a bit confusing, but as long as the application does its job, it’s something you can ignore.

After the scanning task is complete, you have the option to save the task log on your computer as a TXT file. This can be useful if you plan to keep a history of all your scans.

In order to improve detection of stealth malware the latest version of aswMBR using Virtualization Technology. To use this feature your machine must support hardware virtualization.

In closing, it is not an antivirus, this app offers you a simple way to check whether your computer is safe from annoying and unwanted components.
